Welding Rod Fume Induced Parkinson's Disease
Eight years later, Wang examined 8 workers in a ferromanganese plant which had a malfunctioning ventilation system. He found evidence of “Parkinsonian disease” in six of these workers. The exposure was for approximately 30 minutes per day, seven days per week for 8 months. These workers were in their 30’s and 40’s, significantly the median expected age for Parkinson’s disease. Wang’s findings were corroborated by the findings of a study performed by Racette, et al., at the Washington University School of Medicine. Racette found that welders with occupational exposure to manganese contracted the “Parkinson’s disease” 15 years earlier than those of the general public.
