Welders Suffer an Early Onset of Parkinson's Disease
Recent studies have shown that welders have a thirty percent (30%) higher incident of lung cancer than the general public. Current epidemiological studies have also suggested an association between elevated manganese exposure and “Parkinon’s disease.” Dr. Paul Nausieda, medical director of the Regional Parkinson Center at St. Joseph's Hospital in Milwaukee, found in an unpublished report of 20,000 workers exposed to welding fumes found that more than 10% of the "welding population" developed signs of, or symptoms similar to, Parkinson’s disease, compared to 1% among the general population. Another recent study by researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, found that low levels of manganese exposure in animals affects the brain in a way that exacerbates the effects of Parkinson’s disease.
