Elam Welding Case Study Information: Welding Rod Damages
Dr. Nausieda a Neurologist, who testified in Elam, cited infra, claims that there is a substantial link between welding fumes and Parkinson’s. Dr. Paul Nausieda testified that in a study of 20,000 welders from three states, 2,500 have developed symptoms “similar to Parkinson’s.” Although his study is unpublished, this may mean that one in eight welders (12.5%) may be in danger of developing Manganism, compared to one in one hundred (1%) among the general population. According to at least one industry source, there are currently 500,000 people who are active welders, and another 200,000 retired. Of this pool of 700,000 welders, if we consider 5 – 10% of these people as potential victims of Manganism, then the potential plaintiff pool could amount to 35,000 – 70,000 welders. The financial analysts who have examined this issue for the manufacturers have hung a potential price tag of thirty five to seventy billion dollars on this litigation.
If you have been exposed to manganese fumes and suffer from symptoms of Manganism or Parkinson's disease, you may be entitled to monetary compensation.
